NORWAY PRISON HEALTH SYSTEM

  • Has one of the best medical systems in the world- homogeneous population, wealthy, low amount of prisoners

  • Above is Halden Maximum Security Prison in Norway

    • This has been named the most humane prison in the world

    • The reason why is there are fewer inmates within one building so it acts as a rehabilitation center

    • An experience like this can improve mental health not worsen it

  • “Controlling Infectious Diseases in Prisons (BIG)” project- ensure equivalency of healthcare in both the Swiss and Norwegian penal system and outside in the community

    • minimizing the risk of infections being transmitted

    • minimizing the risk of infections being transmitted from the community to within penal institutions  vice versa)

    • standards of prevention, testing, and treatment while ensuring sustainability of the measures and tools developed

    • Has proven to be effective in multiple prisons

  • Too many small prisons-Larger prisons would allow for effective health care services.

    • Small prisons (< 50 places) are not staffed with health care professionals every day, which reduces access to health care

  • Lack of health professionals

  • Overcrowding- not very many prisons due to smaller amount of inmates in Switzerland
